For the first time in ages Sarah and I managed to get out to the mountains this weekend and found there's still plenty of snow about if you go into the backcountry areas. We made the 1.5 hour trip around the Smith Dorrien Trail to reach the Chester Lake parking lot before dodging the snow showers on a nice 8 km ( 5 mile) circular hike. With just enough ascent to keep us working a little (409m) it was a lovely way to spend the day. Lunch was under the forest canopy with snow showers blowing by and, once finished, we drove home via Canmore and looked in on the big budget movie set that is currently tucked in by the roadside. It was great to get some quality time together in the mountains...there never seems to be enough of it. There are no captions with the gallery just shots from along the trail.

..but have we all seen it through a 600mm lens, just in case you haven't click the shot below for a larger version of this cratered beauty.
Cecil and I took a hike to Eagle Hill today, it's one I started on some time ago with Sarah and never returned to. I have to say I was genuinely surprised by the views available from this little lump in the foothills and by the variety of terrain along the way. All in all it's a little gem, click here for full hike and pics.
Ok so it took me long enough to get some images of the house up and running but I have a good excuse...it looked like a bombsite! We do still have a bit to do, there are no pictures up, TV's to mount correctly, basement to get sorted etc, but we've got our furniture and some element of tidiness so here's a look around our new home in Cochrane. Click gallery below for a captioned walk through.
The walk along the riverfront from the house is a great Sunday stroll and Sarah and I are used to making it already. There wasn't a great deal of wildlife about today but spring is well on the way and I'm sure we'll see more as it warms up. Click smaller pic below for captioned gallery.
The deer were out in force today, maybe the cover of thick mist made them a little more bold or maybe they were just enjoying the warm temperatures. Either way it was nice for us to watch them skipping around behind the house, not the Serengeti I know, but we really like to see them pass by no matter how often it occurs.
The house in Cochrane is certainly providing a great viewing spot for the Aurora, I'm still too lazy to actually get myself out there in the mountains to make some great aurora shots, so here's some more 'from the balcony' shots of a great display on Wednesday this week.
Cecil and I took a short wander to Grassi Lakes on Thursday this week just to see what the area was like. It's a bit of a tourist trot so getting there now means we won't have to bash along with the crowds in the warmer months. It's a nice little jaunt for an easy couple of hours, you can read the full trip and see the rest of the images by clicking here.
Every time you type EEOR into Google it comes back with images and text about a certain donkey friend of Winnie the Pooh, but in this instance there is no similarity. EEOR around here is an acronym for the East End of Rundle, a fantastic hike & scramble up a steep and sometimes dangerous ascent to a stunning overlook above the town of Canmore.
Yesterday I made the ascent and got some glorious shots in the wonderful spring sunshine, not to mention a nice tan too, you can click here to read the full hike report and see all of the shots or just take a peek at the gallery below (there are no captions, read the report for the full details) Out on the balcony this evening to catch a couple of shots of a beautiful sunset silhouetting the distant mountains in the Ghost Wilderness, the most prominent of which is 'Black Rock Mountain' on the left of shot. (You can see more of Black Rock Mountain in the post below this one) The specs of light on the lower right of the shot are in the town of Cochrane below us in the valley.
