The Royal Observatory, Greenwich
In late April 2017 while showing my friend Cecil around London we took a boat trip down river from Westminster Bridge to Greenwich, another 'must do' for most visitors to the city. The trip down river is an easy start to the day as you sit and watch the city go by. At Greenwich there's a lovely dock area with one of the fastest 'Clipper' ships ever made; 'The Cutty Sark maintained within a glass museum structure it is quite a sight and quite a nice attraction too. Beside that is a large open area for seating and eating from the surrounding shops, and a beautiful bright 'Helter Skelter' for kids of all ages.
Leaving the dock area brings you quickly to the market which is open 7 days a week but best at the weekend, beyond that you can follow King William Walk to Greenwich Park where you'll find the Maritime Museum, Queens House, Planetarium and Observatory. It's within the ground of the observatory that you'll find the Prime Meridian line where east and west meet at longitude '0' degrees where you can take your turn at standing in both the eastern and western hemispheres of the earth at the same time. Everywhere On earth is measured from its distance east or west of this line in the same way the equator divides the earth into north and south.
The observatory is also where you will find one of the very best views of London, from the Shard, past the city and over the Thames, through Canary Wharf to the Millennium Dome with the park and Maritime Museum between. The gallery below has captions to help you enjoy the journey down river to another one of Londons top attractions.
