Picnic in the Elbow Valley
Saturday was another beautiful autumnal day so we decided to head off to the mountains in the afternoon. We packed a picnic and went to the Little Elbow campground opposite Forgetmenot Ridge before heading off along the Little Elbow Trail.
As usual Sarah managed to walk about 500 metres before she decided it was "warmer than she thought" It's a lovely walk beside the river on a typical autumn day
The path undulates alongside the river but never in any strenuous way and it's an easy wander even when carrying all the usual stuff along with the picnic
Ahead the summits of Mt Glasgow, Mt Cornwall and Banded Peak dominate the horizon, it was my intent to hike the 'horseshoe' here this summer but road closures due to the June flood closed off the area for quite some time and the cycling trails to the base of the mountains are now washed out, so it will need a long summer day to reach both summits and return.....maybe next year.
The trail itself, which was an old fire road is now an old cobbled road, its easy enough for hiking but biking here is little fun now.
It's still a lovely hike and a simple matter of walking as far as you feel like walking before picking a riverside spot for your picnic
There are the occasions where the trail disappears now and then and you have to take to the woods for a short time to bypass the washout
After a nice 4km or so Sarah selected our picnic spot on the rocks of a washed out area where we enjoyed our tea, sandwiches and of course sweets for Sarah. I tried a bit of treasure hunting but to no avail. We turned around here and wandered back along the Little Elbow Trail to the truck counting our blessings every step of the way after another wonderful day in Canada.
