It was Calgary PRIDE Parade today so Sarah and I went downtown to see the show, it's the first time we've been and both agree that we'll be going to the next one (if we're still here) Thousands of people turned out to take part or to spectate and the city centre was a sea of colour for the afternoon. The parade lasts well over an hour and ends in Millennium Park where a music festival kicks in to close the day out, all in all it's another festival that we can mark on the calendar for next year. I guess people must be getting fed up with seeing Aurora pics, but I certainly aren't sick of taking them. It was fantastic to see the return of the phenomenon last night. So I spent another evening of wandering around in the early hours with my camera and tripod in tow. Eventually the mist rose up out of the Bow River Valley and blocked out the sky but for a couple of hours I was in my element again. Here's a few shots from another spectacular evening show.
After walking 5 km in Baker Park the day before with no ill effects, I asked my friend Cecil to join me on a longer trek through the Elbow Valley yesterday. We hiked about 12 km and explored a slot canyon before making a steep climb out of the canyon to rejoin the trail back to the car park. The sun shone throughout and it was great to be back in the foothills in good company, strolling along the little elbow trail. The gallery below shows a few shots from the day (with captions)
Who am I kidding, no matter how often this occurs we are still in awe of the incredible aurora, I moved my lazy backside off the balcony this time and made some really nice shots including this silhouette 'selfie' using my headtorch for illumination. Click here for some of my best aurora shots yet.
My first wander since the surgery so I thought I'd share a few photos of Baker Park on the North side of the Bow river close to home, our favourite park on the south bank (Bowness Park) is still closed as a result of the flooding in June last year. They are working on a full refurb including a new cafe, boating area and kids play area so it will be back in far better shape by winter this year. My walk only covered a measly 5km but it was without adverse effects so positive overall, and just so nice to be out in the sunshine again.
It's hard to believe that I had my surgery 10 days ago, I had great care from the staff at the Rocky View hospital in Calgary and even greater care from Sarah when I got home. After laying around the house sleeping for 7 days (in a chemical induced stupor most of the time) I'm now off the painkillers altogether and wandering around the house, I hope to start walking around local parks next week. In the mean time here are 3 single shots of a deer family that sneaked past this evening, the spotted fawn on the left, mum in the middle and a young buck on the right. Not the best of shots.....maybe those painkillers haven't worn off completely just yet!!
It was Calgary Chinese Festival this weekend and we went down to enjoy the festivities for our third year running. It was a bit less Chinese this year with no lanterns in the trees and no huge dragon dance (which was always great) The lion dancers were there as usual and the sun shone as it has each time we've been here. There's no separate page for the festival as we already have two pages of it on the site. The gallery below gives a feel for the event and has captions included. Click a small image to begin.
We were out on the balcony this evening watching the sunset and having a cuppa when our resident rabbit came out to join us. He lives in the garden in a shallow scrape beneath some tight bushy shrubs, often when we're in the garden he will come out and mill around, seemingly unconcerned about our presence, though tonight he was keeping an eye on us.
