I looked forward to the lunar eclipse all week, the weather predicted clear skies and I couldn't wait to watch the show. So you can imagine my disappointment when at 4pm the sky began clouding over, and by 7pm it was fully covered. We saw absolutely nothing of the eclipse until it reached it's maximum, after several fruitless trips to check on the cloud cover a small hole suddenly appeared. With solid cloud everywhere else I had to hurry downstairs get the camera gear out, switch everything to manual, focus in the darkness and grab a shot before it was gone. With the 600mm lens I struggled to get a short enough shutter speed to prevent blur (from the rotation of the earth) Ultimately I grabbed a few shots of a fully eclipsed 'blood moon' in a couple of minutes before it covered over again and we saw no more. Below is one of the (pretty uninteresting) shots of our glimpse of the event.

A few shots from a particularly nice viewpoint I reached today while wandering in Kananaskis. The larch trees on north facing slopes are in full colour now so I'd better find a few to photograph next week, until then these should whet the appetite.
Another local wander at West Bragg Creek today, a nice 8km circuit as a warm up for something better tomorrow (though I'm not sure what that will be as yet) The autumn colours are continuing to spread across the canopy and the ease of hiking here and the warm sunshine make it a tempting target at any time. As always, click small images below for a larger gallery.
I had a quick hike around my local 11 km trail down at West Bragg Creek today, autumn is in full swing now and it was nice to be back out there. I saw a lovely white tailed deer standing perfectly still in a sunny spot in the forest and best of all he stayed there whilst I got a few shots.
At the end of a long and tiring day yesterday this fine creature decided to stand and pose for me while chomping his evening meal, he was absolutely unmoved as I snapped away, below is a selection from this wonderful moment.
I'm rarely up early enough to reach the mountains before sunrise but every time I do I always think I should do more of it. Here is a selection of shots from highway 40 yesterday as I set out for a day in the mountains. Click small images for gallery.
I set out today with no real aim other than getting to the mountains before sunrise, I'd made an unusually early start and didn't want to waste it. Not only did I catch the sunrise but I found a wonderful hike and topped it all off with the perfect moose sighting. What more could I ask. Click here for the full story.
Today saw me heading out to hike Jumpingpound Loop as it is usually pretty good for early autumnal colours and it's very close to home too. Normally at this time of year I'd save this one for Sarah and I to do together but the ankle injury is still a way off so, for the first time in an autumn season, I made the 12.5km loop alone. As usual there's some early colour along the trial even if a lot of it was flattened by recent snow. Click the gallery for larger images though no captions are provided as the images are self explanatory.
A shot of the trees behind the house today showing everything from green leaves to bare branches, autumn is well on the way now.
When I returned from a hike yesterday I had a shower, ate dinner and then shared this beautiful sunset with Sarah, click image for a larger view and share it with us.
