Dunnottar Castle
2 miles South of Stonehaven on a stunning rocky outcrop is the ruined fortress of Dunnottar Castle, it is a lovely walk from Stonehaven to the castle along the dramatic sea cliffs. The castle can be reached by car for those not ready for the walk.
However you approach the castle there is no getting away from the rapid descent down the purpose built steps (nor the climb back up them)

The Castle is well worth the small entry fee which allows you to wander anywhere within the 3 acre site, in and out of buildings and through medieval passageways, the gallery below gives some impression of the scale of the ruins within. (click for larger)
Now this is a room with a view, unfortunately is was a cell, still at least they must have got some bracing sea air....in winter!!!
the owners had things a little better, though in fairness not much better by todays standards
there are a large number of rooms to explore throughout the place but nowhere to get a drink or food, so take some along
on exiting the castle don't forget to take a wander down to the beach and look around the rockpools
but remember there is still the small matter of the steps back to the top of the cliff
on the walk back to Stonehaven there is plenty of opportunity to take a breather and enjoy the stunning North East coast.
