Everyone Loves a LighthouseLighthouses are so much more than a functional warning device, they are a reminder that other people you have likely never met, care about your safety. They are often in the most striking locations on rocky shores with stunning ocean views all around. They are, more often than not, wonderfully photogenic. It may have been the school visit as a child to Dover Castle in Kent, England where a Roman Lighthouse still stands, that began my love of these elegant structures. Whatever it was that gave me that keenness to visit any lighthouse I get within striking distance of, I'm thankful for it.
That desire has led me to some beautiful locations, from Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia on Canada's east coast (main shot below) to Pachena Point on Vancouver Island on Canada's West Coast. From Dunnet Head on the Northern most point of the UK mainland to Lands End on it's southern tip, and from the beautiful state of Oregon on the west coast of the USA to Bodie Island on the east coast of North Carolina. In many of these cases it was specifically the position of the lighthouse that led me to the location. I hope in time I will be led to more of these wonderful structures on points and spits of land jutting out into endless oceans, after all, everyone loves a lighthouse don't they? |
