Seminole Canyon, Texas
Seminole Canyon is a small State Park in West Texas that borders on Mexico. I dropped in here in February 2009 on my way to the Guadalupe Mountains further West. I'm not sure if the Shaman at the visitor centre was welcoming or warning....
I stopped only to take a break and stretch my legs but the views along the canyon led me to take a wander of a few miles to look around the area, by the visitor centre are steps down to the overhang where ancient people adorned the walls with pictographs, now modern people go along and photograph.
It's a nice walk in very quiet surroundings along the canyon top and I found myself covering quite a bit of ground doing just that (quite a bit, relative to the leg/foot issues) I stuck with the canyon wall and walked a couple of miles.
Using the visitor centre away in the distance as a guide I circled back in a huge loop through the brush and picked up a small trail that seemed to be going in the right direction. In a while I came across the old Southern Pacific Rail road bed and some workings which were signed, suggesting this was indeed a 'trail' and would lead me back to the visitor centre.
After walking so far through the brush it was not very comforting to come across a sign that read "Watch for Snakes", though to be honest after living in Oklahoma a while you find you do that automatically. This was a nice little stop off and wander on a day that threatened to rain but never did.
