The Land Between the Lakes, Kentucky
The Land between the Lakes is a National Recreational Area that spans the Northern Border of Tennessee and the South-Western border of Kentucky between the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers. I came here in October 2008 just a little too late for the best display of fall colours.
I stopped in at a working 1850's farm which is maintained as a tourist attraction but still runs as a farm using 1850's technology
a first glance at the smokehouse at the old place leaves you thinking it is on fire, but a wander up that way tells you it is a smokehouse and how it all works.
the smoke is not so visible from this side
there are a number of barns, outbuildings and a ranch house that you can wander through and watch demonstrations of home making in the 1850's and a few animals such as cows, sheep, pigs and horses corralled around the farm.
on the way out a strong breeze showers the area with golden leaves as I pass the ranch house and it's picket fence.
Back on the road it is a beautiful drive through the Land between the lakes with what remains of fall colours all around
I stopped at a small picnic area and captured a little more colour as I headed North toward Grand Rivers where a canal links the two rivers together
At the canal barges pass almost constantly and the value of the connection is not lost on anyone who stands for a few moments on the shore there
judging by the number of yachts moored up here the locals must also make good use of the waterways
I had dinner in Grand Rivers and took a walk along the riverside walkway before getting in the truck and heading home, an interesting little road trip that was, as always, enjoyable. To be able to obtain new experiences, sights and sounds almost daily is a gift that we both appreciate every day.
