The Parakeets of Hyde Park
A small gallery of shots from Hyde Park London showing the Parakeets that live there in large numbers now. Nobody really knows where they came from but escapees from aviaries is the most widespread and logical conclusion. Though they are a tropical bird ranging from Africa to Aisa they have been living in the park for many years now and are breeding successfully; the 'green ring necked parakeet' is now a permanent fixture in the capital. In fact the parakeets have become so successful it has led to an increase in Peregrine Falcons in the capital too, mainly because the parakeets fly high and make a lot of noise making them an easy target for the fastest birds in the world.
You can watch some of the peregrine nests in London via webcams such as the one on Charing Cross Hospital where 'Charlie and Tom' have nested successfully since 2011, they can often be seen bringing a parakeet back for dinner. Click here for the Fulham and Barnes Peregrine page and see the action, commentary and still images form the nest site.
My gallery below has captions to let you know which part of the park you are in as you go through the images, the main shot is of Queen Carolines Temple to the west of the long water.
