We've had a few nice sunsets since getting home from the UK, storms blowing through always bring with them the potential for spectacular illumination of the clouds from below as the sun dips beneath the horizon. I watched some beautiful sunsets without capturing them lately so tonight I got the camera out and waited. Everything looked promising with some wonderful scattered cloud billowing overhead, unfortunately it fizzled out to nothing as is sometimes the case. I did make a shot of the sun peeking through the gap between the mountains and the clouds before it set, so I'm posting that as it's the only shot I made.

The winter solstice is now almost 2 months behind us and the days are getting longer. The setting sun is (thankfully) moving back across the horizon and in the evening we can once again, see the sunset. I make no apology for posting them repeatedly as they are always such a wonderful sight, always different and always mesmerizing. The mix of colours from the distant horizon to the cobolt blue sky directly above us makes for an unmissable exposure. How could anyone ever tire of such a thing.
It's rare in winter for us to get a sunset that's visible from the balcony because the winter sun has drifted south west for the season, it's even more rare to have an owl share the view. I stepped out to shoot the sunset this evening when this guy came along and sat in the treetops for a moment before taking off again. There was no time to grab a longer lens so I made the most of the silhouette with the setting sun and mountains beyond and I really like the outcome. I've included a few shots of the sunset that made me get the camera out initially but the main image with that perfectly perched owl steals the show I think.
With the sun moving further and further south everyday our supply of incredible sunsets is slipping away until next summer. Tonight we managed to get another truly incredible display thanks to low clouds right across the prairie sky. The main shot is picked from the middle of the sequence but the gallery below shows the whole sequence in order so, click the first image (left side) and scroll through to see the complete series which took place in just seven minutes.
It's our best time of year for sunsets from the balcony (owing to sun position during summer) and though I feel I'm posting them quite frequently, I just can't let evenings like this pass by without at least one capture. I think something inside me reminds me that this incredible view won't be here forever and I should make the memories while I can and secondly, what kind of photographer would let this beautiful sight go unrecorded.
I know it's all too easy to shoot yet another prairie sunset but tonight was more about the storm clouds that passed through during the sunset. The layers of colour were beautifully separated with accents of red on the low cloud and dark blues and blacks above, so I fired off a few shots to share.
As anyone who reads the blog regularly will know, the prairies offer up wonderful sunsets quite often. But every now and again one comes along that is just spectacular and Saturday night was one of those. There's little more I can say about the sunsets that I haven't already said except that I never left the balcony during this one. The clouds moved in layers across a huge sky and then lined up neatly to bounce the last light back down to a city of grateful observers.
Talking to Cecil on the phone when I noticed this late late show from the sunset tonight and stepped out quickly to grab a few shots, after all you can't get too many sunsets.
We have so many beautiful sunsets it's difficult not to swamp the site with them at times, but the site is for memories as much as anything and this is yet another that we want to remember. We have had the shortest winter and the warmest spring this year and recently some of the most beautiful sunsets. The six shots below show some of the progression over a period of about 25 minutes.
I was out on the balcony tonight (As I promised Ethan I would be so he could see me out of the plane as he flew home to England) I managed to capture another lovely prairie sunset. I'm pretty sure I saw Ethan waving as he went overhead too and even this beautiful sunset couldn't brighten the mood as we waved goodbye to Mark, Hayley and Ethan at the end of their 2 week stay.
