Another drop in location from the recent US road trip, an excellent little park well suited to families seeking a picnic spot and natural climbing frames for the kids (of all sizes) click here to see more of the park.

Stopping at this historical roadside building just off highway 8 in Missouri really left me wondering about the cultural differences between the US and UK. Click here to see more images and understand why this wouldn't even be here back home.
Clinton is located about 60 miles south-east of Kansas City Missouri, I stayed overnight here during my April road trip and spend the early evening exploring the downtown square and I'm so glad I did. To join me in the town square in Clinton click here.
After an overnight stay in Clinton Missouri I made this short 2 mile hike in Harry S Truman State Park as my morning leg stretcher. The easy wander through typical Missouri forest to an overlook at sunrise was a great start to the day. Click here to read the full description and see more images
A journey through the most stunning prairie park in the US, 250,000 acres of prairie grassland littered with sedimentary rock formations of all shapes, sizes and colour. The Badlands National Park is an absolute wonder that entertained me for more than 40 miles as I drove across South Dakota. Click here for more about the park.
If you've seen the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" this tower will look familiar to you, but it shouldn't make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck unless you start carving replicas of it out of mash potato.
Rising from the north-east corner of Wyoming it is an impressive site, sacred to many of the native tribes and a climbing mecca for free climbers. For me it was a 2 km walk in a beautiful location with views across the plains and of course of the tower. To see more shots and read a little about the tower click here. For most of us 'oldies' this place needs little introduction, Custers last stand is a legend that (at one time) circled the globe, the trouble with that is, it captures peoples interest and then they go research the reality of the hollywood tale. If you like the story the way it is then perhaps this isn't the place for you, either way you can see more of the location and read my thoughts by clicking here
Another short musing from my road trip to North Carolina, one of the first locations I called at on the second day of my journey, located 30 minutes east of Billings Montana, Pompeys Pillar is a National Monument marking a point on the Lewis & Clark Trail. To read more and see more photos of Pompeys Pillar click here.
Part of my road trip to North Carolina included a meeting with friends on the Tennessee/North Carolina border and a hike along a short section of one of the most famous trails in the USA, the Appalachian Trail. I've just commenced the detailed write up of some of the more entertaining sections of the trip and began with this wonderful hike. Click here for the full hike and pics.
As I departed from the hotel in Great Falls Montana this morning I found myself a little disappointed that the trip would soon be over, driving north in the beautiful wide open spaces of the state did nothing to help that feeling. I took the most direct line north (I-15) in order to cross the border close to a Southern Alberta Park that I had decided to visit.
Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park sits very close to the Canada/US border and even though it added a couple of hours to the journey I decided to take in one more place before the road trip came to an end and I'm glad I did. At almost 18 square kilometres there was too much to see today, but there was enough for me to earmark the place for a return visit with Sarah. The large hoodoo's that overlook the Milk River on both banks are a delight to hike around, over and through. They stretch for huge distances and have trails running in all directions between them as well as some specific mapped trails. There are more than 50 petroglyph sites with hundreds of separate works. It is nominated as a World Heritage Site and even includes a North-West Mounted Police Outpost on it's original site close to the mouth of a deep gully, native tribes have lived in this part of the Milk River Valley for over 9000 years and it was a very popular stopping point during seasonal migrations. After the park I took the fastest route back to Calgary where a snow storm arrived just as I got home, perfect timing. After clocking up 10729 km I converted to miles and found a very strange coincidence....6666.6 miles, incredible (but still 16 miles short of my last 'epic' outing) |
